As for presets, for RenComp I’m really not doing anything special – attack and release are set to fastest, that’s the key thing! Then set the theshold so the comp’s grabbing probably most of your audio and a ratio typically of about 5:1. For imaging stuff, generally with a good recording at least, you want a serious amount of gain reduction going on. Other settings: manual mode; Opto; Warm. EQ beforehand so you’re EQing “into” the compressor; sometimes afterwards too, say if you want to really thin the voice out.
