Its been a long couple months of preparing to start a new job (which I am oh so very excited about) plus enduring the Cumulus move in Dallas, in my current job. So, after taking a little time away from talking to the paramount figures in Radio Imaging and Voiceover I am back with a really fun interview. Matt Fisher at BBC-Radio 1 in the UK is the guest. He is actually one of 6 different people who produce station sound for Radio 1 and Radio 1 extra. Not only do they have a stable of highly skilled and creative producers in house, they also have the luxury of out-sourcing projects to other great producers. I tried to pretend (unsuccessfully at times) to know something about radio in the UK but Matt set me straight on a number of topics. I hope you enjoy it!

There are other books written about production of music and even audio for radio but none, that I have seen, that give the imaging and branding of a station this much focus. They break things down into chapters that are easy to reference in the future and make it an easy “skip-around” type of book. I would call it a handbook and I do recommend it. As anyone who has been to my site has noticed AV Deli has been a huge supporter of this podcast for almost 2 years. AV Deli is a great service in which I take part. But if you are looking for a 40 minute advertisement for them then this will be a bit dissatisfying. We did talk about Joe’s thoughts on the current radio climate and his vast background. However, Joe and I wanted this episode to focus more on what a producer or voice talent can do to prepare themselves for life after the radio station. We discuss the ups and downs of being on your own. We talk about what you can expect and the unexpected of finding your niche outside the protection of a corporate station. There are still a lot of ways a talented producer or voice talent can earn a living and Joe gives us a insight into his life experience to help plan for the future.

I am very grateful to be joined by John Willyard this month. He is the longtime voice of Country Radio. I say that as an obvious generalization because when you talk about the “sound” of country radio and the station voices that are used, he is at the very top of the list and used by the biggest and most important stations around the country. John is not limited to country imaging VO but he is limited to country when it comes to radio imaging VO and that’s exactly how he likes it. He has also been the voice of the CMA’s for 15 years and counting, the voice of CNN and many other projects on TV, Radio, Web and even museums! This was a really fun and informative interview for me. I love waxing on the past and to do so with a guy like Rick was a unique experience. We start part talking about his career and the stops along the way he makes. We spend a good amount of time on his work at the legendary Hot (103) 97 in NYC. I tried to play a little devils advocate as to why we shouldn’t just expect people to produce 7 stations in one radio group with ZERO time to create and Rick gives plenty of reasons why this is bad practice. We also discuss more of his current projects and one of my favorite voice talents, Rick’s friend and neighbor, Ann DeWig. This is the final part of the Rick Allen interview. We talked about so much and also realized….we talked about SO MUCH! So we did end up bringing the episode to a conclusion.

Mainly I took things a little deeper into the technical world speaking very specifically about the tools he uses and some of his signature tricks.

I hope to speak with Rick again in the future. Perhaps my favorite thing is to know that Rick is still so passionate about radio, imaging production, sound design and life in general. It gives us younger folk an upbeat outlook on the industry when sometimes we hear a lot more negative then positive vibes from the people we work with and for.

While his main focus is on creating the tools that imaging producers use to create imaging he also has his fair share of radio clients for whom he produces branding. I got an advance copy of a new FX package called Fame-Fx from the guys at Soundquadrat in Stuttgart, Germany. I am very pleased with the entire package. I decided to use it for a new client’s launch package (Demo Below) – Eye 97. I am guessing most producers will find the package more useful for higher energy formats like CHR, Dance/Electronic, more aggressive Hot AC’s and possibly some alt/rock stations. The elements are broken up in a VERY easy to navigate structure with more mixouts then you will even need. I will write up a better review soon and hopefully offer an exclusive ROTR discount on the buyout imaging package when it is officially available.

John Kerber is the guest and has a pretty fascinating, and perhaps for some, relate-able story. John currently is the head of production the Howard Stern channels over at Sirius in NYC. Before that he was many places including MTV and also as he put it, unemployed about to receive his last unemployment check. John has also been producing excellent sound design elements for his company Blue Sound Design which he has just recently brought to a National scale with Citadel Media. Brian Kelsey is the famous producer who helped to create and proliferate a sound that many consider one of the best Rock Radio Stations in America. 92-3 K-Rock NYC 1996 to 2000. He was brought in to pick up after John Frost made the initial launch. He Produced with creativity and originality and in the process, was recruited by Howard Stern to re-brand his show. He is one of the top guys you mention when you mention rock and/or alternative radio branding. In Part One we discuss his background, his “idol”, his arrrival at K-Rock NYC and other not so serious stuff, like his boss’ nickname for Brian. Note: I didn’t get it into the podcast but here are some technical specs of Brian’s Studio. He uses and loves his Neumann TLM-103 Mic. He has a Rane processor/channel strip and runs all his audio into Pro Tools. He uses a simple Mbox Mini for his road kit with some digi plugs to emulate the Rane.

A very short bio: I started working in radio when i was about 14 years old when i used to do shows on a charity run radio station. I also was a young drummer and percussionist and by the age of 20 had toured Europe with various bands and record labels but quickly got tired of the music industry. A very short bio: Was born, grew up loving radio, became a mobile dj, became a radio dj, started making imaging and bits for my show, became better at doing that than being a radio dj. Been a full time producer the last 8 years.

Love everything about radio and love producing, you give 10 people a dry liner to produce and you’ll get 10 different versions, there’s no right and no wrong, just maybe more popular or more current or topical.

Jumped to protools 2 years ago, constantly building a library of content, recording shows, grabbing instrumentals and accapellas, movie sound tracks etc. produced a lot of packages for stations here in Ireland, Done a bit for US clients too as well as producing work parts/content for 2 different monthly imaging services, thats something I would love to do more of. Beatmixes a specialty… I think.

About your entry: Decided to enter because it sounded a fun thing to do, So this was produced on my sort of second back up machine using adobe 1.5 with waves bundle. I wanted to do a chase sequence which I did, but wanted to make it more relevant so I used sound tracks from popular tv shows and movies

you hear a guy out of breath and the computer saying access denied as he furiously types into the key board then he gets the door open and I had English vo artist Tim Burden voice The Chase Is On, then lots of gun fire and explosions with music from the Matrix providing the soundtrack then into music from kill bill with a few karate sfx

car chase fx and explosions and finishing with music from transformers and a major explosion and a car crash, is he alive or dead, then you hear a faint heartbeat and then another and another finishing in style with Moby’s tune from the Borne Identity and end of transmission static beep type things.

TM Studios produces the jingles at KSCS but to give us a more creative spin on this heritage 4 note sound I started just producing and integrating the logo into promos, TOH’s and song intros. It worked very well with a Justin Moore song (heard at the end) and I failed miserably with a Lady-A song(not heard). My point is, if I can do it you can do it! If you have a station jingle with a recognizable 4 or 5 note tune then start putting it in other things.
